How Do I Connect the Gateway?

What Is the Salus Universal Gateway?

The SALUS Universal Gateway Model UG600/UGE600 is a user-friendly, easy-to-install device that connects your equipment to the online Smart Home platform. A single gateway can support up to 100 pieces of equipment.
After successfully creating a profile, follow the steps on your dashboard to activate your gateway.

First-Time Users
If you are adding a gateway for the first time, follow these steps:

1. First, make sure you are logged into your Smart Home account. You should see an “Activate Your Gateway” message on your dashboard.
2. Next, plug your universal gateway into the back of your modem with an Ethernet cable. Then plug the AC line into a power outlet.
3. When the gateway LED light turns solid blue, click on the Activate Gateway button in Smart Home.
4. Next, you will see a blank field entitled Gateway serial number and a Search for Gateway button on the screen. Now, press once on the top of your device so that it flashes green.
5. When the gateway flashes green, click on the Search for Gateway button on the screen. Your device serial number should automatically populate in the serial field.

NOTE: You have two (2) minutes between pressing on top of your gateway and clicking on the Search for Gateway button before the device times out.
1. Once the gateway serial number automatically populates in the field, continue filling in the following information:

  • Select your Country from the dropdown menu.
  • Select your Time zone from the dropdown menu.
  • Enter your Address, City, State, Zip in the fields.
  • Enter a name for your device.

NOTE 1: You have two (2) minutes to complete all of the fields before the universal gateway times out.
NOTE 2: If you time out, press once on the top of your gateway so it flashes green, then click on the Search for Gateway button. Once the numbers automatically populate in the field, click on the Activate my Gateway button at the bottom of the screen.
1. Click on Activate My Gateway.
2. Proceed to Connecting Equipment

TIPS & TRICKS

  • When adding a gateway, make sure the gateway and your computer or mobile device are on the same network (subnet IP address).
  • Connect the Ethernet cable to the gateway and router first. Then connect the gateway to the power source.
  • If your account has more than one location, be sure to activate additional gateways for the proper address.

How Do I Use the Gateway?

Gateway LED colour codes help you identify the status of your gateway. The colour guide and status index is shown below.

Solid Red

  • The gateway has power, but has not successfully connected to the router or internet.
  • The gateway has been reset to factory defaults by pressing the button for more than 10 seconds.
  • The gateway has been removed from your network.

Solid Green

  • The gateway is not connected to the internet. Connection to the router is OK.

Solid Blue

  • The gateway is successfully connected to the internet.

Flashing Red

  • The gateway will allow equipment to join its connection. Press the button once to begin identification (See Flashing Green below).
  • Holding the button for more than three (3) seconds changes the LED from flashing red to solid blue, exiting the “permit-to-join” state.
  • If the button is not pressed after the red light flashes for more than 12 hours, the LED automatically changes from flashing red to solid blue, indicating a time-out and exiting the “permit-to-join” state.

Flashing Green

  • The gateway is identifying equipment to be connected. If the button is pressed during this stage, LED returns to solid blue.
  • If equipment is not identified within 10 minutes, the identification process will time-out. If the time-out occurs, the gateway will change from flashing green to solid blue.

What Should I Do If the Gateway Does Not Connect?

Troubleshooting: Resolving Error Messages
If you receive one of the following error messages during the universal gateway activation process, follow these steps to successfully activate it:

Error Message

Gateway not found. Please try button on gateway and click refresh search button again.

  • When adding a gateway, make sure the gateway and your computer or mobile device are on the same network (subnet IP address).
  • Registration window has expired. Please press button on gateway again.
  • Gateway registration failed.

Steps

  • Press on the top of the universal gateway once. The LED should return to a solid blue colour.
  • Now click on the Search for Gateway button on the screen to try again.
  • If the universal gateway serial number still does not populate, press on top of the device once so that it flashes green.
  • Now click on the Search for Gateway button.
  • Press on top of the universal gateway once. The LED should return to solid blue. Click on the Search for Gateway button immediately.
  • Next, click on the Activate my Gateway button to complete the process.
  • Press on top of the universal gateway once. The LED should return to solid blue. Click on the Search for Gateway button immediately.
  • Then, click on the Activate my Gateway button to complete the process.

How Do I Connect My Equipment to Smart Home?

After successfully creating a profile and setting up the gateway, follow the “Let’s Connect Your Equipment” wizard to connect your equipment to Smart Home.

First-Time Users

If you haven’t added any pieces of equipment to your system, Smart Home will prompt you to begin at Step 3, “Let’s Connect Your Equipment”.

1. Review the steps next to the orange Scan for equipment button and your User Manual to make sure your equipment is ready for connecting.
2. Once your equipment is ready, click Scan for equipment.
3. As equipment is detected and associated with the gateway, it will appear on the screen.
4. Once your equipment is detected, click on the piece of equipment you want to begin setting up.
5. Click Connect Equipment.
6. Walk through the equipment-specific setup wizard.
7. After each successful set-up, you will be returned to the “Set up Your Equipment” page where there will be a green checkmark beside the completed item.

Tips & Tricks
If the message “Sorry, no devices were found” appears, click on the Back button to return to the “Connect Equipment” screen and try again.
Make sure your equipment is charged (plugged in or batteries inserted).
Know when/if you need to push a button on the equipment so the gateway can detect it.

Returning Users with Existing Gateway/Equipment

If you already added a gateway to the system and are adding another, follow the steps below:

1. On the menu bar, click on Equipment.
2. Select Gateways from the dropdown menu.
3. Click on Add a Gateway.
4. Next, you will see a blank field entitled Gateway serial number and a Search for Gateway button on the screen. Press on the top of your gateway once so that it flashes green.
5. When the gateway flashes green, click on the Search for Gateway button on the screen. Your device serial number should automatically populate in the serial field.

How Do I Connect a Smart Plug?

A smart plug inserts directly into an open outlet giving you connected control over whatever is plugged into it. If you are adding a smart plug as a first-time user, prepare your equipment and skip to Step #3, “Scan for Equipment.” If the smart plug is already in your list of available equipment, skip to “Smart Plug Setup”.

1. Click on Equipment on the menu bar.
2. Select Add New Equipment.
3. Review the steps next to the orange Scan for equipment button and your User Manual to make sure the plug is ready for connecting.
4. Once your smart plug is ready, click Scan for equipment.
5. As the smart plug is detected and associated with the gateway, it will appear on the screen.

Smart Plug Setup:

1. Find the plug to be connected from the list of available equipment.
2. Check the box next to the smart plug.
3. Click Connect Equipment.
4. Name the smart plug.
5. Click Next.
6. You now have two choices:

  • Click Finished. You are then redirected to either the “Let’s set up your equipment page” (if more equipment is waiting to be set up) or the Dashboard.
  • Click your smart plug name. You will be offered an opportunity to:
    • Add preset OneTouch rules and;
    • Pin the smart plug to the Dashboard.

7. Click Complete Setup. A success message will appear confirming set-up is complete.
8. Click Finished.

TIPS & TRICKS
When plugged in, the smart plug will be an automatic white colour. There will be no colour change or colour flashes.
If a smart plug has been connected previously, it will need to be reset before you can add it to your system. Press and hold the plug’s button while plugging in the device, and release the button when the LED flashes. When the LED flashes, it can be re-added to Smart Home.

Connecting Your Equipment: Returning Users

If you already have a piece of equipment connected to Smart Home and are adding more:

1. Click on Equipment on the menu bar.
2. Select Add New Equipment.
3. Review the steps next to the orange Scan for equipment button and your User Manual to make sure your equipment is ready for connecting.
4. Once your equipment is ready, click Scan for equipment.
5. As equipment is detected and associated with the gateway, it will appear on the screen.
6. Once your equipment is detected, click the piece of equipment you want to begin setting up.
7. Click Connect Equipment.
8. Walk through the equipment-specific setup wizard.
9. After each successful set-up, you will be returned to the “Set up Your Equipment” page where there will be a green checkmark beside the completed item.
